The sermon answers these main questions:
1. Where are we going on our spiritual journey?
We are headed toward God’s promised destination—the “Garden City,” where God’s Kingdom is fully established.
We should allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. God may not lead us by the quickest or easiest route, but He leads us by the better way—even when that means going through the wilderness.
2. How can we know that the journey is worth it?
God gives us a compelling vision of the destination. Just as God reminded Israel of a land flowing with milk and honey, Jesus gives us the promise of eternal and abundant life. This vision gives us courage to keep going.
3. How do we find direction on our spiritual journey?
We should allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. God may not lead us by the quickest or easiest route, but He leads us by the better way—even when that means going through the wilderness. Our response is to surrender our plans and pray, “Not my will, but your will.”
4. How will we be sustained along the way?
Jesus Himself is our sustenance. He is the Bread of Life and the Living Water. He provides what we need spiritually, and God also provides for our practical needs.
5. What rhythms will help us continue for the long haul?
God gives us healthy rhythms such as rest, worship, prayer, Scripture, generosity, service, forgiveness, and caring for others. He also gives us milestones—celebrations and reminders of His goodness—that help keep us motivated.
6. How should we celebrate God’s goodness?
We should regularly mark God’s goodness with worship, celebration, good friends, food, and fellowship. Celebrating milestones helps us remember God’s provision and keeps us moving forward.
7. How are we protected from the enemies we face?
God protects us spiritually. Our true battle is not against people, but against spiritual powers, the darkness of the world, and our own sinful nature. God provides the armour of God: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer.
8. What should we do when we feel unprepared, tired, or lost?
We should remember what God has already placed in our “backpack”: His vision, direction, sustenance, rhythms, milestones, and protection. We need to stop trying to manage the journey alone and receive what God has provided.
9. How can we remember all that God has provided?
The Lord’s Prayer gives us a daily “packing list”:
