What is Christmas?

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came into the world to bring salvation to humanity.

The birth of Jesus is central to the Christian faith. This story is primarily found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. According to Scripture, Jesus was born in Bethlehem to the Virgin Mary, fulfilling ancient prophecies about the coming of the Messiah. Angels announced His birth to shepherds, and wise men travelled from the East to worship Him, recognising Him as the King of the Jews (Matthew 1–2; Luke 1–2).

Christmas marks the moment when “the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (John 1:14). This incarnation, God taking on human form. It is seen as a profound act of divine love and humility. It signifies the beginning of God's redemptive plan through Jesus, who would later die and rise again to offer eternal life for all of us who believe in Him.

While modern celebrations often include gifts, decorations, and festive meals, the meaning of Christmas centres on hope, peace, joy, and salvation. It is a time for us to reflect on God's grace and the fulfilment of His promise to send the Saviour into the world!
